MALAYBALAY CITY (PIA)--Rescuers from the local disaster stations in 20 towns and two cities of Bukidnon played their roles in the week-long 4th Rescue Olympics hosted by the provincial government through its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).

Governor Rogelio Neil Roque led the opening ceremony on July 17. He underscored the event's relevance in honing skills.

"To the strong men and women from various local disaster stations in the province, your roles in fostering readiness for disaster response are crucial. The games you play here will help save lives someday," he said.

The life-saving Olympics bring together participants from various municipalities, eagerly engaging in a series of challenging exercises, which include the Fire Mixed Combat Challenge that simulates real-life firefighting scenarios such as climbing ladders, dragging hoses, and breaching doors, among other obstacles that participants may face during the race.

Mountain Search and Rescue, Vehicular Accident simulations, and the intense Swift Water and High Angle Challenge are part of the competition to test the skills and endurance of the participants.

Themed 'BIDAng Pilipino: Building a Stronger Filipino Well-being towards Disaster Resilience,' the event aligned with the National Disaster Resilient Month (NDRM) observance, aiming to raise public awareness on crucial aspects of disaster management.

The PDRRMO's relentless efforts seek to equip communities with knowledge and skills to tackle unforeseen challenges and safeguard lives during calamities.

The grand champion will receive P100,000, while minor awardees will each receive P50,000, according to Anecito Torayno Jr., the Operations and Warning Section chief of PDRRMO. He, however, clarified that the panelists cannot reveal the results until they have thoroughly assessed the scores and ratings of all participating teams.

With rescue teams from diverse areas coming together for the event, Torayno pointed out how it strengthened their commitment to sustaining disaster resilience and creating a solid, safer future for everyone. (BGE/PIA-10/Bukidnon)
